1/7/2008Intelligent Enterprise 2008 Editors' Choice Awards picks "The Dozen" most influential vendors that will drive the intelligent enterprise for 2008. Most are easily recognizable for such a list but a few were surprising, in my humble opinion.
You can find the Dozen HERE, plus leaders in other catagories. This is an informative viewpoint on the integration of "Web 2.0" technologies into the Enterprise in 2008 from blogger Dion Hinchcliffe at ZDnet. Dion predicts that we will see more Web 2.0 type apps - Web-based applications, mashups, collective intelligence powered business software, social software, etc. – much of it user driver from the bottom up. Most interesting to us was #2 of 12: "Enterprise search will remain broken or highly limited in most organizations". We can help here!
Read his entire post HERE 12/19/2007This is a good article from eWeek on how IBM is using Web 2.0 and virtual reality technologies to help their employees become more productive. Maybe they are also trying to shed the buttoned-down image to attract younger talent as mentioned in this excerpt: "….Is IBM designing these applications to appease the young programmers incoming from college, perhaps to keep the best talent from flocking to so-called cool companies such as Google or Facebook?"
Read the entire article HERE 12/15/2007This KMWorld article centers on a study that is very reflective of a similar study we noted here earlier from Accenture. Though "search" is not mentioned per se, the "search" for information is at the core of the problem.
Excerpt: "Managers are frustrated that they lack the tools they need to be agile and effective. They feel strongly that an agile organization would be more competitive; they're frustrated that they can't effectively anticipate and manage the most important events."
This is certainly a common theme amongst our client base. 10/26/2007We are seeing more and more discussion on this subject. From ITWeb: BI, Enterprise Search Start to Merge:
Excerpt:
Business intelligence is posited as the silver bullet to analyze vast tracts of structured data. Enterprise search has been targeted at helping users find the needle in their unstructured information haystack.
Ultimately, both technologies are there to help users find information, and to help people advance innovation. In many instances, organizations recognize the need for both technologies to play a part in what has become a complex strategic and operational landscape. 10/18/2007We think Sharepoint is going to play a very large role in the future enterprise. There is no denying the fluid connection between operating system, database, Office and Sharepoint. This is where we think enterprise search is also going – or at least the presentation layer. While the search engine will reside on its own server or server farm, companies will be able to offer "plug-and-play" search to large organizations. Security, alerting, and all other user interface matters will be handled by Sharepoint.
We think there will be a server that resides off-site and provides resumes from major job boards, like Monster. These resumes will be fed nightly to the second server at the client site. In addition to external resume sources, the company will also have the option to copy over resumes posted to the company's career site. Together this information is indexed and classified. Sharepoint modules are simply loaded into the existing company portal and talk directly to the second server. Vivísimo Velocity 6 is offering a social networking feature in its latest release of enterprise search. This is an excellent feature as long as it does not overwhelm the search results. We do something similar at EDM Logic and call it "peer reviewed" content. When an employee uploads a document, the system classifies it within a few seconds and asks the user to validate the computer's selections. Users can also add classes and even add a personal bookmark for later recall. If the user takes the time to review the classes before hitting submit, we consider this document validated. Users who use the search engine can also validate classes. After a period of time, employees come to rely on this notation.
The Vivísimo announcement can be found <here>. Every once in awhile, we see something that speaks to us. Jonathan Harris' "We Feel Fine" project show a remarkable use of algorithms to read emotions written by bloggers and report on the overall feelings of society around us. The video speaks to everyone about the power of computers reading data and drawing inferences. This is at the root of EDM Logic's taxonomy work. We are amazed when we see this type of analysis and the power it has to tell a great story. A link to the video is <here>.
